Unlocking Mathematical Potential: A Guide to Discovering the Perfect Math Tutor

Maybe you are still at school and studying for a GCSE in maths? Alternatively, you could have only just left school — and selected maths as one of the A Level subjects you will be taking at further-education college.

Though maths is a useful skill to master, it can also be challenging to master. There might be certain mathematical concepts you are struggling to get your head around — like algebra, probability and statistics.

In this situation, you could be wondering how to find a good maths tutor who would be able to complement the tuition you are already receiving (or will receive) from your ‘main’ teacher. After all, the additional tutor would have to meet a wide range of criteria.

For a start, they would need to be available at times convenient for you, such as when you aren’t attending school or college. It will also be crucial for the tutor to have the required expertise to help you build upon your existing body of knowledge.

Fortunately, with our assistance, you can solve the puzzle of how to find a maths tutor who ticks all of these crucial boxes — and more besides. It all starts with assessing your specific requirements…

Why You Should Have a Maths Tutor

Even if you are far from ‘bad’ at maths, arranging extra classes can lead you to excel even further in your studies. This can prove pivotal if — for example — you are hoping to study for a degree in a subject, such as Maths, Physics or Engineering, entailing established skills in maths.

This point especially bears emphasis if you intend to apply to a top university, like Oxford, Cambridge or Durham, where competition for places on degree courses is fierce. You want your GCSE and A-Level grades in maths to be as strong as possible, so you are edged out by other applicants.

What if you are a parent, and chose to read this article to learn how to find a math tutor for your child? In that case, you might want to first ask them whether they feel they need one.

It would also be a good idea to discuss the matter with their teacher, as they are bound to know of any areas of maths where your child is falling short and so could do with a lift.

What Difference Can Our Maths Tutors Make?

There are many different variables at play here, and you ultimately get out of maths tuition what you put into it. We have online math tutors who can teach you on a private one-on-one basis at the pace you prefer and reckon works best for you.

As the classes are conducted online, you can easily fit them in at times outside conventional academic hours. For example, after going to school or college for the day, you could return home and, while there in the evening, squeeze in an extra hour of mathematics instruction.

Our online tutors certainly have the specialist qualifications and experience to unlock amazing results for you — as they already have for many other students. In 2023, 80% of our GCSE students passed at grade 7 or above, while 85% of our A Level students achieved grades in the range of A* to B.

Still, we also know that each student is unique and can have their own learning curve. For this reason, we will regularly report back to you about your progress so that we can spot any problem areas and help you devote more attention to overcoming them.

How to Find a Good Maths Tutor

Whether you are studying for a GCSE or an A Level, a math tutor with the right credentials can prove invaluable. The following measures can aid you in your search:

  • Ask for recommendations: Whether you are the parent or the child, you might have a few friends who have been in your position and are now able to recommend specific tutors.
  • Look up tutors’ qualifications: Many of our tutors are currently at university or have only recently graduated, and so know academic dos and don’ts from their own recent experience.
  • Have a ‘test run’ with the tutor: We offer a free introductory session where you can have an initial online call with a My Learning Room tutor and see if you have a rapport with them.
  • Chat with the tutor at length: You want to see whether they are flexible enough to accommodate your specific needs, e.g. with regard to the scheduling of the lessons.

It’s clear, then, that exactly what constitutes a ‘good’ A level maths tutor can be a subjective judgement. So, you could struggle to tell whether a given tutor is right for you until you have talked with them.

How Much Do Maths Tutors Charge?

In the UK, the per-hour tutoring charges can vary — from a meagre £10 to more than £100. However, remember that you shouldn’t choose a class just on the strength of its price, as some providers could too easily compromise course quality in their ‘race to the bottom’.

Meanwhile, the prices at the higher end of the above-mentioned range tend to be charged for in-person sessions in areas where transport is relatively expensive, such as central London.

If you book an online class, the fee is likely to be lower — as the tutor does not need to physically travel anywhere and so cover the associated cost as well.

Just consider the example of our online lessons, which are priced in the region of £24 to £40 (the higher the level of difficulty, the higher the price).

Would you like us to help you prepare for maths A-Level exams? Are you eager to book a GCSE maths tutor online with My Learning Room? Either way, our pay-as-you-go system can make it easy for you to manage the cost. For more information on that point, please email info@mylearningroom.co.uk.

My Learning Room is so much more than just a tutoring company! The one on one service is fantastic and the best experience I've encountered across the many tutoring companies we have tried (and not made much progress with). We were concerned about our son's progress at school and wanted to give him some extra help to ensure he can achieve his potential and open a few doors. We felt his school wasn't offering enough as he's a bright boy and capable of more. After failing to be convinced by a few other companies including a local tutor, we came across My Learning Room. We initially started with online GCSE Maths lessons after a very encouraging chat with Amer who was great to deal with. She listened and it was clear she really cared right from the start. The level of tutoring was impressive and we saw improvements within a short space of time. Knowledge on the curriculum was excellent and they focussed on key areas combined with tailored exam practise. We added online GCSE English and Science lessons and again the quality of online tutoring was clear to see, all tutors were very personable and helped build my son's confidence along with his knowledge of these subjects. A patient approach is what was required along with some key advice and techniques; My Learning Room delivered this exceptionally well. It wasn't long before his progress was noticed at school and he was placed in a higher set. My son achieved 8's & 9's across the board. We were simply overjoyed! I genuinely feel this wouldn't have been possible without Amer and the team. We were given advice on further studies, subjects to take and the grades required going forward. My son's confidence has grown so much over these last 2 years and we no longer worry as much as we used to. It was truly a blessing to come across these guys and the consistent positive feedback from the school, exam results and general progress in him as an individual has been such a bright note over these last couple of years. Thank you so much to everyone at My Learning Room. You will not be forgotten and we will keep in touch.

Great company for anyone who needs that little extra help. My son was predicted a 4 at GCSE Maths, we started the tutoring once a week in December and he received his results 2 weeks ago and got a 6! His tutor was a university student so quite close to him in age and very relatable. Would highly recommend My Learning Room, they are extremely flexible, professional but also personable and according to my son quite fun. Thank you so much, if we need any additional tutoring during his 6th form we will be back.

My son was very much struggling with his maths preparation approaching his GCSE’s. I was extremely worried although Amerpreet was absolutely amazing. Her calming approach was extremely beneficial and she has ignited a drive in my son that I’m sure will lead to amazing grades!
