Chemistry A Level Tutoring

Chemistry is a science which is often seen as daunting to many students. With its complex formulas, reactions, and calculations, it can be difficult to stay on top of the course material; but a solid understanding of this subject can be a pathway to a successful future. Chemistry impacts every aspect of our daily lives; it is the basis of our medicines, our food, and understanding our environment.

Succeeding in your chemistry A Level requires a strong foundation, hard work, and plenty of knowledge – and it is easy to become overwhelmed or stuck with the complex material.

Our online A Level chemistry tutors can help you navigate this challenging subject, while arming you with the necessary skills to ace your exams. This can make all the difference to your final grade, as well as your overall confidence.

What Does A Level Chemistry Include?

As you might expect, A Level chemistry covers a wide range of topics. You’ll start by covering basic concepts, such as atomic structure, quantum numbers, and chemical bonding.

The content is a major step up from GCSE study, and will focus more closely on topics like organic chemistry, thermodynamics, and kinetics. You’ll also learn about the fundamentals of physical chemistry, including enthalpy and entropy.

The main topics that will be covered in chemistry tutoring online include:

Physical Chemistry:

  • Atomic structure
  • Amount of substance
  • Bonding
  • Energetics
  • Kinetics
  • Chemical Equilibria, Le Chatelier’s principle and Kc
  • Oxidation, reduction and redox equations
  • Thermodynamics (A-level only)
  • Rate equations ( A-level only)
  • Equilibrium constant Kp for homogeneous systems (A-level only)
  • Electrode potentials and electrochemical cells (A-level only)
  • Acids and bases (A-level only)

Inorganic Chemistry:

  • Periodicity
  • Group 2, the alkaline earth metals
  • Group 7 (17), the halogens
  • Properties of period 3 elements and their oxides (A-level only)
  • Transition metals (A-level only)
  • Reactions of ions in aqueous solution (A-level only)

Organic Chemistry:

  • Introduction to organic chemistry
  • Alkanes
  • Halogenoalkanes
  • Alkenes
  • Alcohols
  • Organic analysis
  • Optical isomerism (A-level only)
  • Aldehydes and ketones (A-level only)
  • Carboxylic acids and derivatives (A-level only)
  • Aromatic chemistry (A-level only)
  • Amines (A-level only)
  • Polymers (A-level only)
  • Amino acids, proteins, and DNA (A-level only)
  • Organic synthesis (A-level only)
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (A-level only)
  • Chromatography (A-level only)

What Is The Difference Between A Level Chemistry and GCSE Study?

A-Level chemistry is a more advanced and comprehensive course than GCSE chemistry, with far greater emphasis on the theoretical aspects of the subject. At A-level, you will be expected to understand concepts in much greater depth, as well as being able to interpret and apply this knowledge in new contexts.

Unlike GCSE, A-level chemistry also requires students to learn more about organic chemistry and physical chemistry. This includes studying how chemicals react with each other and understanding the principles behind thermodynamics. If you are currently working towards your GCSEs, we have chemistry GCSE tutors available to assist with your revision.

A-level chemistry also focuses heavily on developing practical skills. You will need to be able to perform laboratory experiments, interpret data from graphs and models, and draw valid conclusions from your results. These skills are essential for anyone looking to pursue a career in science after their A-levels.
