English A Level Tutoring

Studying English at A Level is more than merely an academic exercise. It is an opportunity to explore a world of literature, culture, language, and history, as well as to immerse yourself in new ideas and perspectives. It also enables you to develop your creative writing skills, analytical thinking, and communication abilities, and to learn how to navigate and interpret the complexities of life.

For many students, however, the A-Level English course can be a challenge. The range of topics covered in the syllabus can be daunting, and there’s often an expectation that you will need to have mastered complex literary theory before you even start your studies. Finding the right A level English tutor online, therefore, can make all the difference.

What Does A Level English Involve?

A Level English involves a range of activities and topics – from reading, analysing, and discussing literature from various eras, right through to studying language, grammar, and usage.

As a student of this course, you can also expect to explore the history of the English language and its development over time, in addition to assessing current affairs through written texts such as newspapers, magazines and websites.

Another key aspect of this course will be understanding how to write in different forms such as essays, reports, stories or poems, as well as delving into cultural contexts and theories. We have both A level English language tutors and A level English literature tutors available to support you.

Some of the main topics you can expect to encounter during your A Level study include:

Core Content:

  • Love through the ages
  • Texts in shared contexts
  • Independent critical study: Texts across time

Options

  • Option A: WW1 and its aftermath
  • Option B: Modern Times: literature from 1945 to the present day

What Is The Difference Between A Level English and GCSE Study?

A Level English is a more advanced qualification than GCSE English, requiring a greater understanding of literary texts, language, and theories. For example, you will be expected to have a solid grasp of the basics of literary analysis, including an awareness of narrative structure, genre conventions and characterisation.

You will also need to be able to explore the context in which a text was written, and understand the implications of this. Furthermore, you will need to be able to develop your own interpretations and critically evaluate other people’s opinions at a much more sophisticated level. If you are still working towards your GCSEs, we have online GCSE English tutors available to support you!

The selection of texts studied at A Level English is more challenging than at GCSE English, and you will be expected to engage with a variety of contemporary and classic literature. The focus at A Level is on developing your own analytical skills rather than learning the content by rote, and this involves developing an in-depth understanding of texts and mastering the ability to express your thoughts clearly and persuasively.
